Anyone wearing axe-shaped jewelry had strength and power. However, it did not protect the wearer from real iron axes and swords. Therefore, in ancient times, it was common to bury valuables for safekeeping. But the owner did not always return to retrieve the treasure. This piece is based on the model of a large pendant in the shape of an axe blade, which was part of a silver treasure found in the village of Lämsä in Kuusamo in northeastern Finland. The treasure was buried in the era of the Crusades, an era of unparalleled prosperity and turbulence. The rich stamped ornamentation indicates Karelian origin.
