The prototype for the ornamented brooch was found at Tuukkala in Mikkeli, dates from the northern crusades (1150-1250 A.D.). Lighter jewelry was replacing the heavier Viking style by this time, and the use of silver was increasing. The brooch’s extensive floral ornamentation is evidence of the design’s eastern origin.
